New Flyer receives 2005 CCME Pollution Prevention Award and is recommended for ISO 14001 certification

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; June 2, 2005

New Flyer’s significant progress in continuing to make its operations environmentally sound has been recognized this week by two independent organizations:

1. The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) has awarded New Flyer the 2005 CCME Pollution Prevention Award

2. NSF-ISR, Canada, (formerly Deloitte & Touche Quality Registrar Inc.) an independent, accredited ISO registrar has recommended New Flyer’s Environmental Management System for ISO 14001:2004 Certification

"New Flyer is committed to manufacturing advanced transportation vehicles in environmentally-friendly facilities," said John Marinucci, President and CEO of New Flyer. "As the leading manufacturer of hybrid and alternate fuel heavy-duty transit vehicles in the United States and Canada, we understand the impact we have on the environment, and feel it is critical that our employees and local communities benefit from our environmental commitment."

In 2002, New Flyer began evaluating the volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) used in the workplace, and found that the primary sources of VOC emissions were associated with flooring installation and surface coating (painting) operations. The company implemented new processes and worked with suppliers to develop new products, and have reduced the VOC emissions to the atmosphere by approximately 46%.

"We are pleased that our efforts in improving our environmental performance are being recognized," said Mike Sarazin, Director of Manufacturing Engineering and Environment. "We have worked closely with our employees, government, suppliers and the local communities to develop and implement initiatives that minimize the environmental impact of our activities."

CCME is comprised of fourteen Canadian environmental ministers from the federal, provincial and territorial governments and promotes effective intergovernmental cooperation and coordinated approaches to improving the environment. CCME has established a partnership with the Canadian Centre for Pollution Prevention (C2P2) to present the awards. The Awards program nationally recognizes organizations that have demonstrated leadership in pollution prevention. New Flyer won in the Large Business Category, where previous winners include Alcoa, IBM Canada and Dow Chemical.

ISO 14001 Certification is important to New Flyer because it demonstrates that New Flyer has the Environmental Management Systems in place to minimize the harmful effects on the environment and to continue to seek ways to improve its environmental performance.

In addition to its robust environmental management system, New Flyer continues to lead the industry in its commitment to developing and manufacturing low-emission transit vehicles. New Flyer has more hybrid buses on the road than all other manufacturers combined, having produced diesel-electric and gasoline-electric vehicles. New Flyer has the longest history of electric trolley manufacturing in the United States and Canada, and it has delivered the most natural gas transit buses, with more than 3000 units currently in revenue service. New Flyer’s product innovation leadership was recognized last year by CALSTART, North America’s leading advanced transportation organization, that selected New Flyer as the overall winner of its prestigious Blue Sky Award for 2004. The Blue Sky Award is given for outstanding marketplace contributions to advanced, sustainable transportation that cleans the air, improves energy efficiency and helps reduce greenhouse emissions, and thereby, improves the quality of life in major urban centers.
