Winnipeg, MB, June 2, 2004 - Manitoba Transportation and Government Services Minister Ron Lemieux has joined with University of Manitoba Transportation Institute acting executive director Ed Tyrchniewicz in congratulating John Marinucci, CEO of New Flyer Industries, on being named Manitoba's Transportation Person of the Year.
"Mr. Marinucci's selection for this prestigious honour illustrates the leadership and strength in sustainable transportation solutions in Manitoba's transportation manufacturing industry," said Lemieux. "He understands that the development of efficient, competitive transit vehicles requires New Flyer to take an active role in the exploration and implementation of advanced vehicle technologies such as a hydrogen fuel cell powered bus."
The award is one of several announced this week during National Transportation Week. The event celebrates the efforts of workers in the Canadian transportation industry in making it an important contributor to the economic and social development of the nation.
Marinucci was chosen for his leadership in the renewal of the local transit bus manufacturer. He joined New Flyer as president and CEO in April 2002 and has worked with the management team to substantially increase the value of the company. Part of the renewal strategy has been the introduction of innovative transit products including, most recently, a rapid transit bus featuring a diesel-electric hybrid drive train.
"Manitoba's central location may provide a geographic location for our strong role in the transportation industry, but it is the vision and abilities of individuals such as Marinucci that provide the momentum behind our growth," said Tyrchniewicz. "Under his direction New Flyer is emerging as a leader in providing innovative urban passenger transportation solutions to the cities of North America."
About 60 per cent of New Flyer's 2,000 employees work in Winnipeg with the remainder based at plants in Crookston and St. Cloud, Minn.
