Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; December 18, 2006;
At its inaugural Safety and Quality Assurance Awards Ceremony held on December 8, 2006, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) presented New Flyer of America Inc., a subsidiary of New Flyer Industries Inc., with the 2006 Effective Partnership in Quality Medal. This is the first year that MARTA has given out these awards and, of the nine awards made by MARTA, the Effective Partnership in Quality Medal is the only award presented to an external organization.
The Effective Partnership in Quality Medal is presented to an employee, team, department or supplier/vendor who has worked closely with MARTA’s Office of Safety and Quality Assurance to improve service delivery through the utilization of quality principles. The recipient of this award must have demonstrated service, product and/or system reliability improvement, must have a documented and current quality assurance program and must have received above-average scores in all audits conducted by MARTA, the American Public Transportation Association, the Georgia Department of Transportation and the U.S. Federal Transit Administration in the most recent twenty-four month period.
In addition to meeting all of the above criteria, New Flyer was also selected as a result of its quality products that exceeded MARTA’s expectations for customer support in several areas and its demonstrated quality and safety leadership initiatives within the bus manufacturing industry in the U.S. and Canada.
"We are proud of the partnership we have developed with MARTA," said Hans Peper, New Flyer’s Executive Vice President of Customer Services, who accepted the award on New Flyer’s behalf. "Over the past sixteen years, both New Flyer and MARTA have experienced and successfully managed tremendous growth through effective organizational changes, and our collaboration along the way has resulted in strong relationships and an unwavering focus on continually improving the products and services we deliver to our respective customers."
New Flyer began supplying buses to MARTA in 1990 with an order of 270 high-floor buses (which was at that time New Flyer’s largest order for buses). Since then New Flyer has delivered over 800 buses to MARTA, consisting of high-floor and low-floor buses utilizing both diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) systems. Currently, the Company is completing an order of 55 CNG buses to MARTA from the Company’s facility in Crookston, MN.
"We will continue to work hard to maintain our successful partnership with MARTA in the future," Mr. Peper continued. "Continuously providing leading transportation products and services to all of our customers has made New Flyer a dominant bus manufacturer in both the U.S. and Canada."
"This award acknowledges the success of our ISO-based operating management systems and our commitment to safety and quality. These are the key elements of the Company’s core operating principles," said John Marinucci, President and Chief Executive Officer of New Flyer. "It is encouraging when the impact of our internal efforts and processes are recognized by our customers."
All of New Flyer’s operating facilities are registered to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards and is the only heavy-duty bus manufacturer in the U.S. and Canada to have obtained all three of these certifications.
